PRESS RELEASE: The Camille Awards 2021 Live Ceremony

8th April 2021

The European Composer and Songwriter Alliance (ECSA) is pleased to announce the winners of this year’s Camille Awards. The online award ceremony premiered live on April 8th at 6:00 PM on ECSA’s YouTube channel.

The Camille Awards – European Film Composer Awards are a set of awards given to composers of exceptional pieces of film and audio-visual music.  At the ceremony, celebrating both exceptional musical talent and cultural diversity, the following composers were awarded:

Best Orchestral Score: Johan Ramström (Sweden) for “Sara with All Her Being”, directed by Gunilla Bresky;

Best Electro-acoustic Score: John Gürtler (Germany) for “Systemsprenger”, directed by Nora Fingscheidt;

Best Original Music for a Series: Labrinth (United Kingdom) for “Euphoria”, created by Samuel Levinson.

The Camille Awards were able to, once again, at the same time, honour the greatest achievements of European composers of pieces of film and audio-visual music, and to expand awareness among the audience, composers and filmmakers on the importance and the power of film music soundtracks.

ECSA also granted a Special Camille Award to Alberto Iglesias, in recognition of his exceptional score for Dolor y Gloria, film directed from Pedro Almodóvar. The score transcended the current categorisations.

The ceremony featured contributions from all the nominees as well as the renowned members of the International Jury. Among them, Patrick Doyle remarks: “It’s just amazing to be part of a community that looks after composers and inspires composers the way this Alliance does” while David Arnold congratulates all nominees for “the extreme breadth of the work, the originality of the work, and the very raw talent that is on show.”

Mrs. Sabine Verheyen, Chair of the European Parliament’s Culture and Education committee, delivered the welcome speech and expressed her support to the cultural community heavily hit by the current crisis and, in particular to film & audiovisual music composers, which are “crucial in conveying the mood of a film”. She also stressed that “we have to ensure that composers and songwriters can continue to make music in the future” and underlined that “authors often face buyout contracts, which prevent them from benefiting from a fair and proportionate remuneration. The copyright directive could change that – it can deliver better remuneration to authors and improve contracts and working conditions. This is the only way that cultural recovery can be effective and sustainable.”

The 2021 edition of the Camille Awards was organised by ECSA with the support of the Creative Europe Programme. In 2021, seeing as the Awards were taking place online, ECSA partnered with FAME’S Macedonian Symphonic Orchestra. Nominated composers had the opportunity to record their scores with the Orchestra and have them showcased during the online ceremony. ECSA also partnered with OTICONS, the European talent agency for film composers. A special thank you also goes to Dopeness Productions for their support in shooting the recordings of the orchestra at the FAME’s Studio in North Macedonia.

The European Composer and Songwriter Alliance (ECSA) consists of a network of more than 60 composers & songwriters organisations from 27 countries working together towards improving social and economic development of music creation in Europe through equitable commercial conditions for composers and songwriters. It sets out to defend and promote the rights of authors of music at national, European and international level by any legal means.
